Young people are already bringing communities together through sport, culture, volunteering and everyday acts of leadership.
This theme explores how young people shape decisions, connect their ideas and lead collective action around priorities they define. It follows the relationships, shared learning and collaboration that help their work grow.

A game is about more than the final score
Who picks the teams? How do players share the space? What happens when someone has questions, ideas or wants to challenge the way the game is played?
In Burao, the Dhallin-Kaab Initiative uses moments like these to bring civic learning into sport. Football and basketball become opportunities to practise fairness, cooperation and leadership.
Young people helped shape the playbook. Before training began, 26 participants came together to adapt GAME’s Playmaker curriculum. Young people from displaced communities and local civil society organisations helped connect the sessions to everyday life in Burao. One idea stood out. Leadership is a practice, not a position.
From learning to leadingThirteen young trainers went on to co-facilitate a two-day camp with 35 newly recruited Playmakers from displaced and host communities.
They combined football and basketball skills with street mediation and role modelling. GAME and SCORE supported the sessions as young people prepared to lead sports and mentoring activities in their own neighbourhoods.
Building the foundations together
While the initiative is still in its early stages, the focus has been on listening, adapting and preparing young people to lead.
Work is also underway on a Youth Civic Council. YOVENCO and SCORE have drafted the selection criteria and terms of reference to guide the call for applications.
What We Are LearningStart by listening
Young people helped shape the curriculum before training began. Their experiences gave the learning a local starting point.
Leadership happens in everyday moments
Working through a differences in opinions. Making a fair decision. Being someone others can look up to. These are all ways to practise leadership.
Learn together and lead together
Young people from displaced and host communities are training side by side. As the work continues, we look forward to learning how they bring these skills into their sessions and communities.
