Research brings evidence into public discussion. Dialogue creates space for people to question it, share their experiences and consider what it means for decisions that affect their lives.
Through this theme, we explore how Somali civic actors connect research, public perspectives and decision-making. Their work brings different voices into conversation and creates opportunities to find common ground.

Different perspectives. One shared space.
Convened by Somali Public Agenda in Mogadishu, the Somali Governance Forum brought government representatives, opposition actors, researchers, civic actors and citizens together to discuss Somalia’s electoral future.
Research presentations, panel discussions and direct questions opened up conversations about political trust, accountability, inclusion and compromise. Livestreams and media coverage carried those discussions beyond the room.
What we are learning
The design of a conversation matters
At the forum, time for questions and direct exchanges gave participants opportunities to challenge ideas and hear responses. Creating space for dialogue involves thinking carefully about how people can participate as well as who is invited.
Civic actors contribute in different ways
Research, moderation, public questions and practical recommendations all helped shape the discussion. Together, these contributions show how civic actors can connect evidence with public concerns and political debate to drive meaningful policy outcomes.
Finding common ground takes continued engagement
The forum created valuable space for people to explore political differences, listen to each others’ perspectives and consider areas of common ground. As this work continues, we look forward to learning how research and dialogue can build connections, influence policy, and open up possibilities for collective action.
